Govern in favor of plus sizes to ensure

The new Action Plan to Combat Aesthetic Pressure 2023-2026 presented by the Minister of Equality and Feminisms of the Generalitat, Tània Verge, seeks to take an important step in the promotion of body diversity in the world of fashion and other social spheres.

This action plan will have a budget of 12.5 million euros.

It will focus on developing around sixty different actions in areas such as fashion, food, consumption, audiovisual, sports, labor, education and health.

One of the most important measures of this plan is the modification of the Consumer Code so that large multinational clothing retailers can offer a wider range of sizes.

In addition, these brands will be obliged to carry out “body diversity promotion” actions at events such as Barcelona Fashion and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week.

Regulation that seeks to guarantee “bodily diversity”.

This measure is essential because the limited supply of sizes in fashion has been a persistent problem for a long time.

Especially for people who do not have a “standard” body according to the canons of the fashion industry.

People with larger bodies often face discrimination and bias that prevent them from finding clothes that fit well and make them feel comfortable and confident.

In this regard, another important measure will also be implemented, which is the promotion of personnel selection processes with “blind curricula vitae”, in order to combat discrimination based on physical appearance or clothing.

This means that employers will not have access to information about the physical appearance of job applicants, which could help reduce bias and discrimination in the workplace.

Measures in the audiovisual, sports and educational fields

In the audiovisual field, an agreement will be promoted with the media and advertisers to adopt criteria for egalitarian advertising and to identify the use of images or body parts that have been retouched or manipulated.

A code of good practices will also be developed to promote bodily diversity in the programming of the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals (CCMA).

It will seek to encourage the dissemination of digital content produced by young creators where they express themselves against aesthetic pressure.

Likewise, in the field of sports, the inclusion of body diversity in advertising and the promotion of sports brands will be promoted.

Encourage the practice of sports as a tool to improve health and well-being, rather than as a means to achieve a certain standard of beauty.

In the educational sector, the inclusion of bodily diversity in school and university programs will be promoted.
