Born on Valentine’s Day 46 years ago, Itziar Castro says good-bye to us

Today Itziar Castro leaves us.

Her acting career began at an early age, when she discovered her passion for the performing arts. Born on February 14, 1977 in Barcelona, she quickly made a name for herself both locally and internationally. With a wide variety of roles in film, television and theater, Castro has captivated audiences from all walks of life.

Her key role came in 2017 when she starred in the critically acclaimed film “Skins.” Her powerful performance as Samantha earned her widespread praise and numerous award nominations, including the Goya.

LGTBI Activist

Itziar Castro left an indelible mark beyond the screen as a fervent LGTBI activist and against fatphobia.

Her dedication to these movements established her as an emblematic figure of diversity in the Spanish audiovisual industry. With her presence in social networks, Castro stood out for her unique and dissonant style, facing criticism with a characteristic humor that made her even more beloved among her followers.

In addition to his work in film and television, Castro ventured into the world of literature in 2021 with the release of his first book, “Con el corazón por delante”. This collection of poems, published by Planeta’s Martínez Roca, revealed a more intimate and poetic side of Castro.

With illustrations by Gisel Fust, the book is an emotional journey through love and heartbreak, presenting her reflections on a spectrum that ranges from the personal to the universal, reflecting the many ways in which these feelings can manifest themselves.

The publication of this literary work not only consolidated her career as an actress and activist, but also introduced her to the world of literature, demonstrating her versatility and depth as an artist and as a person.

We want to remember her with the affectionate words that Itziar Castro herself shared just 10 days ago on her Twitter account.

Words dedicated to … Itzi.

Letter to Itzi by Itziar Castro – November 29th, 2023

Dear Itzi,

I would tell you so many things, things like keep dreaming, that by dreaming hard and with lots and lots of effort, dreams are achieved, that once achieved not everything is rosy, on the contrary, that there are hard, sad, lonely moments… that there will be insults, blows, stones on the way, but also lots of love, affection, admiration… that without wanting it you will be a mirror for many, (oh yes, there will be more genders than 2, and girls will not have to want to be boys to be able to fly planes or be world champions in soccer), that this will make you feel heavier and a certain vertigo, but that the will to live of many, will be in part (and they will tell you so) thanks to your empathy, sorority, generosity, fight and always put the body, that this wears and sometimes you will want to go into the cave, but it will be worth it.

That you will miss more people than you would like, but that others will always be close by to support you, as you will support them, that the chosen family is indestructible and that in the moments of “I can’t take it anymore” they will make you laugh, in tears, very melodramatic, just as you like it.

That those who insult you, attack you, put acorns on your desk and call you piggy, will be your fans, (yes, your fans, as I told you dreams come true) and they will ask you for pictures (many pictures, even when you are not in the mood) but above all they will ask you for forgiveness.

The world will evolve so fast that everything will seem new, that is why we must remember and not forget, and not let our guard down, so as not to fall into the same mistakes and not to lose what has been achieved in terms of freedoms and human rights.

That you will be able to love without fear, although some people will be afraid and that will break your soul into a thousand pieces, but it will serve you to create art and beauty.

That there will be moments of pain, emotional and physical, that will tell you that you are unhealthy, and despite taking care of yourself, some will want you to suffer, because hatred will stalk you, but do you know what is the best remedy for it? Happiness, self-care, self-love… even if sometimes you don’t know where it is, it is there.

And if in spite of all the positive things I tell you, you don’t have courage, look at this picture and remember all the illusion you had to achieve those dreams and now, be THANKFUL.

PS: we need to embrace our inner child more.
