The Teatre Grec and the Barcelona Grec Festival

TEATRE GREC

The Teatre Grec (Greek Theater) is located in the city of Barcelona, in the mountain of Montjuic. And no, it is not a construction carried out by the ancient Greeks; it is a work carried out by the Catalan architects Ramón Reventos and Nocolau Maria Rubió i Tudurí. As happened with Poble Espanyol (which we talked about in the previous post), the Teatre Grec was also built on the occasion of the International Exhibition of 1929.

The Teatre Grec is a construction inspired by the Theater of Epidaurus, one of the best preserved we can find in Greece. Its surface area is almost 500 square meters and it has a capacity for 1,900 spectators. And besides the theater itself, you can also enjoy the spectacular gardens designed by Rubió i Tudurí and Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier; and also a restaurant called Grec that only opens its doors during the Grec Festival in Barcelona.

GREC FESTIVAL OF BARCELONA

The Grec Festival of Barcelona is one of the most popular arts festivals held in Spain, and one of the most popular in Europe. It brings together the best of music, dance, theater and art in general worldwide.

The name of the festival is due to the fact that its first edition was held precisely at the Treatre Grec. And it was such a success that all the other editions, 34 now, have continued to be held here.

If you are in Barcelona between July and August, don’t miss this festival!
