In November the world will reach 8 billion inhabitants. In Barcelona, the population decreases

It is estimated that in November 2022 the world will reach 8,000 billion inhabitants, according to United Nations estimates.

The “World Population Prospects 2022” report estimates that by mid-November, the 8,000,000,000,000th person may be born.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the figure is cause for celebration and recognition of human diversity and the health advances that have lengthened global life expectancy.

What is expected is that before the end of this century it will slow down the rate of human growth.

The 8,000 billion population and life expectancy

By 2019 global life expectancy reached 72.8 years and is projected to continue rising to an average of 77.2 years by 2050 according to the United Nations.

In the least developed countries, life expectancy lagged 7 years behind the world average.

The latest United Nations projections indicate that a maximum of 10.4 billion people may be reached in the 2080s, a figure that can be maintained until 2100.

World population growth through 2050 will be concentrated in eight countries:

Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Egypt, India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Pakistan and the United Republic of Tanzania.

China is currently the most populous country, although the United Nations predicts that by 2023 it will be displaced from first place by India.

About Spain’s population vs. 8,000 billion people

The United Nations indicates that the maximum peak population in our country will reach 47.5 million inhabitants in the whole of Spain, with a downward trend.

It is estimated that from 2022 to 2100, the Spanish population will decrease rapidly.

Births in Spain have fallen by more than 50% in the last fifty years, from almost 3 babies per woman in 1964 to 1.24 babies in 2020.

And in Barcelona?

In the Catalan capital, the total number of births for the year 2021 (11,510) was the lowest in the city since 1939.

Thus, for the second consecutive year, Barcelona registered a decrease in its population, with 1,639,981 people registered on January 1, 2022 (1.2% less than the previous year).

Part of the population decline in the Catalan capital is linked to the Covid 19 pandemic, but also to the migratory process.

The number of centenarians increased by 7.8%, reaching 931 people. Of these, 83% are women.

The aging of the world’s population brings many challenges.

In fact, the United Nations indicates that by 2050, the population over 65 years of age worldwide will represent 16% of the world’s population. In addition, the trend now is toward single-person households.

The agency’s invitation is to adapt public programs to seek the welfare of older adults with health care systems and improved pensions and social security.
