City Hall suspends New Year's Eve celebration in Maria Cristina

Due to the recent measures announced by the Generalitat de Catalunya in the face of the sixth wave of Covid, the mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, regretted to suspend the New Year’s Eve celebration on the Reina Maria Cristina Avenue.

The very traditional popular celebration every December 31 in our capital city was cancelled due to the coronavirus.

The celebration symbolizing the turn of the year will be affected by a curfew that will not allow people to go out on the streets between 1 am and 6 am, including New Year’s Eve.

The City Council states that it is in permanent meetings to evaluate the behavior of the contagions and of the omicron variant.

And the mayor says that the suspension of this activity is common sense.

Therefore, he says that he “regrets this decision, but the New Year’s Eve party will not be able to be celebrated as it was intended”. This is all due to nighttime restrictions and the need to avoid any crowding.

The City Council keeps under constant review the activities that are planned for the city, as well as ensuring compliance with the authorized measures.

However, in spite of the situation, strategies are being developed to promote commercial restaurants and nightlife in the city, sectors that need help to withstand the restrictions.

The restrictions in Catalonia due to Covid also affect concert halls, theaters, massive events, among others. Only meetings with a maximum capacity of 10 people are allowed.
