Barcelona Activa: a year of impact on youth employability

In an effort to address the youth unemployment situation, Barcelona Activa has celebrated the first anniversary of its initiative called the Barcelona Activa Convent.

In the last year, this platform has provided support and guidance to more than 5,000 young people, reaching more than 14,000 people in total.

This comprehensive project focuses on providing tools and resources to boost the employability, training, entrepreneurship and digital skills of Barcelona’s youth.

Integral accompaniment for youth with Barcelona Activa

Located in the Convent of Sant Agustí Civic Center in Ciutat Vella, the Convent of Barcelona Activa has offered personalized counseling, group activities, training sessions and specific spaces for mock interviews and recording of video resumes.

This initiative has served 55% of the city’s unemployed youth, making a significant difference in the lives of those seeking career opportunities.

The remaining 45% of the people served belong to the 25 to 30 age range. Among the participants, 27% have completed higher education or university studies, 33% have post-compulsory education and 25% have completed compulsory education (ESO).

As for those seeking to improve their employment position, they represent 15% of the young people served who do not have a high school education.

Noteworthy initiatives

During the first year, the Barcelona Activa Convent has implemented various initiatives to strengthen the job and career prospects of young people in the city. Among them, the following stand out:

  • Professional life project: a vocational and professional orientation program aimed at young students of educational centers. More than 15,911 young people from 175 schools in the city participated in career guidance activities.
  • Singular projects: 281 personalized itineraries of orientation, training and labor market insertion or return to the educational system have been developed for the most vulnerable young people. 48% of the participants in these itineraries are either working or continuing their studies.
  • Barcelona Treball Joves: a program of group and work activities that has multiplied by 7 the number of young participants, with the most significant increase in the Barcelona Treball Joves program.
  • Youth telematic service: 11,000 telephone calls were made to provide information and referrals to employment, training and self-employment resources for young people.
  • Youth Information Point: attended 591 people on a walk-in basis, offering information on resources and job search advice.

Challenges and future prospects

Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2024, the Barcelona Activa Convent plans to improve candidate selection interviews and use technologies such as video resume and social networks to facilitate the job search.

In addition, customized itineraries will be developed to establish individual roadmaps for young people.

This initiative is part of the Barcelona City Council’s 2020-2023 Youth Employment Promotion Plan.
