5G Catalunya approves the use of holograms for teaching classes

Taking advantage of the low latency of 5G networks, thanks to the 5G Catalunya initiative, the use of holograms as a tool for distance learning was approved.

Holograms have ceased to be science fiction and have made inroads into the development of certain remote activities.

The new uses are possible thanks to 5G, which has a low latency, allowing sound and images to be sent in a few thousandths of a second.

5G Catalonia and the use of holograms

The 5G Catalunya initiative has made it possible to test holograms for teaching classes. This way, in classrooms there is no need for the teacher to be physically there and he/she can teach the class from another location.

The Cibernàrium, Barcelona Activa’s training and technology dissemination center, located in the Media TIC, was in charge of demonstrating the tool.

During the presentation, attendees were able to see and hear a speaker as if he were with them in the room.

The difference was that at that moment they saw it thanks to its 3D image and with an almost instantaneous interaction.

The speaker was at another location and the image was captured volumetrically so that it could be streamed to another location via private 5G network.

The best part is that everything was achieved without the need for 3D glasses or any other device. Only one screen to reproduce the hologram.

The pilot test was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the telecommunications infrastructure company Cellnex Telecom and the Masmovil operator.

The augmented reality company Aumenta Solutions, Lenovo and the consulting firm Nae also participated. Barcelona Activa was also part of the project.

Project objectives

The 5G Catalunya project consists of seven use cases that seek to develop 5G solutions for urban environments.

The aim is to promote digital transformation and consolidate the implementation of a technological ecosystem as a lever for social and economic development.

The 5G Catalunya initiative can reach other sectors because of the possibility it offers to transmit a large volume of data in real time.

Thanks to this technology, it will be possible to experience immersive communication services, connectivity style through bidirectional holography.

Holography will give a sense of presence and immediacy that will surely improve the quality of interaction compared to other forms of distance teaching or learning.

Program experts indicate that 5G technology and holograms will transform the world of education and open up new business models for companies.

Likewise, 5G technology opens up many opportunities for use in other sectors. For example, in remote medicine, care for people at risk of exclusion or for the industrial sector.
