Barcelona's historic Portal de la Pau begins renovation work

The historical and old headquarters in Portal de la Pau of the Port of Barcelona received the support to start the works to be refurbished. To this end, approximately 17 million euros will be spent on the works, which will take approximately 18 months.

Thanks to this approval, the Port of Barcelona will start the procedure to award the contract for the rehabilitation of the Portal de la Pau.

Once the remodeling is completed, the building will house the Port Interpretation Center, dedicated to explaining to visitors and neighbors everything related to the operation and complexity of this infrastructure.

They will also be explained about their contribution to the competitiveness of the economy, as well as to the well-being of citizens.

Work on the Portal de la Pau in Barcelona

During the 18 months of work, the reinforcement of the building’s structure will be carried out, as well as the restoration of the interior and exterior architectural elements and all the installations.

The renovations will be carried out according to strict energy efficiency, environmental and safety criteria.

The execution of the work will be carried out while the America’s Sailing Cup is being held in 2024. However, so that the competition is not affected, the works will stop between August 1 and October 31, 2024, right with the regattas.

In fact, the central government declared the America’s Cup to be held in Barcelona as an event of exceptional local, national and international public interest.

Interesting facts about the Portal

This historic building was inaugurated in 1907. However, the building has had no use for more than six years. In the early years, the Mundial Palace restaurant was located there.

At that time, the building was being used as a maritime passenger station. Right there, the ships that connected Barcelona with the Balearic Islands used to dock.

About four years later, they built the large international maritime station in Barcelona where the World Trade Center is located today.

With the reforms, the idea is for the port to regain its institutional location and create a new civic space.

The first floor will be converted into a large and well-lit hall that will welcome visitors as an information space open to the public about port life. The facility will also have a cafeteria and a souvenir store.

On the other hand, the second floor will be restored to its original layout with a central hall of about 400 square meters covered by a central vault.

With the renovations, this space will be used for the Port of Barcelona’s Board of Directors meetings, as well as for other special meetings and receptions.
