More than 25 million euros to restore the city's monuments

Barcelona Provincial Council has announced an investment of 25 million euros to restore historic buildings and monuments in the province.

This initiative is part of the program for the rehabilitation and improvement of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipalities 2022-2024, approved in the plenary session of the municipal corporation in February.

In total, 180 projects will be promoted to restore castles, churches, monasteries, palaces or archaeological sites through 147 applications from local councils or county councils of the demarcation.

These interventions are distributed over three years: those already carried out in 2022 with a budget of 755,000 euros, those in 2023 with 10.6 million euros and those in 2024 with 13.8 million euros.

25 million euros for different works

Among the subsidized works are:

  • Rehabilitation and improvements to the Red Tower of Sant Pere de Vilamajor
  • Restoration, works and improvements of the second phase of the Can Rigalt farmhouse in Sant Adrià del Besòs.
  • Improvements and restoration of the Fonda Chapel in the Church of Sant Vicenç de Fals
  • Rehabilitation of the Ullastres spa in Tona
  • Restoration and works at the Font de la Canya in Avinyonet del Penedès, an Iberian site.

The actions are distributed in different regions of the province of Barcelona.

The region with the most interventions is Osona, followed by l’Alt Penedès and Berguedà. They are also located in Vallès Oriental, l’Anoia, Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Maresme, Moianès, Garraf and Barcelonès.

Nearly 25% of the subsidies go to municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants and the municipalities and county councils co-finance 77% of the subsidized actions.

The maximum eligible amount is 200,000 euros for unique buildings of high heritage value and 450,000 euros in cases such as archaeological sites.

The objectives of the millionaire investment

The investment seeks to protect and recover the historical and cultural heritage of the province of Barcelona, promoting the conservation and knowledge of local history and culture.

In addition, these restorations are expected to contribute to the economic and tourism development of the areas where these monuments are located.

In this way, Barcelona is preparing for a renovation and restoration of its historical and cultural heritage with the aim of improving the tourist experience in the city.

The restoration of monuments and old buildings is an important measure to attract even more visitors interested in learning about Barcelona’s rich history and culture.

Enhancing the historic heritage can also increase the city’s ability to host cultural and artistic events, which could have a positive impact on the local economy.

Although the restoration of historic heritage can be an important factor in attracting tourists, factors such as safety and the quality of tourist services must also be taken into account.
