Is Barcelona home to one of the ugliest buildings in the world?

The answer is YES. And so says a curious list that ranks the ugliest buildings in the world, including one in Barcelona.

While Barcelona has beautiful buildings, historical and modern, even some of the most beautiful on the planet, it also has buildings that are not so beautiful.

The list is compiled by Buildworld, a website that set itself the task of ranking the 68 ugliest buildings in the world.

But as the authors of the ranking themselves say, ugly or beautiful, the worst thing is that the building is ignored.

The world’s ugliest buildings: the most prominent ones

To elaborate the classification, the authors made a list of buildings that are popularly known as ugly.

From this initial identification, they began to analyze the comments people were making about them on Twitter and rank them based on these opinions.

And although the list has a clear English and American touch, Barcelona was not left out, with the Agbar Tower occupying the 62nd place in the ranking.

The Agbar Tower has always been a source of discord and controversy since it was built and recently opened a viewpoint to reconcile with the city.

But the winner of the title of the ugliest building in the world was the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, which had 42% of negative comments.

Second place went to the Edgar Hoover Building in Washington DC with 38.7% and third place to Newport Station in Newport Wales with 25.7%.

The tendency is to observe in the list a majority of Anglo-Saxon buildings, particularly those located in England and the United States, where even Trump Tower also appears.

However, the first building on the world list that is not part of any of these countries is the Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea, which ranks sixth. This building is known as the “Ghost Hotel” which has been vacant for more than 30 years.

Just as beauty is different for everyone, so is ugliness. That’s why the ranking includes so much variety.

Why a building is considered ugly

The architects in charge of the construction of the world’s largest buildings indicate that the qualification can revolve around engineering, the money invested or the aesthetics and structure of the construction.

But for most of these professionals, the worst thing, rather than being ugly, is that the building is ignored and boring.

They are often called ugly because passers-by, whether tourists or locals, qualify them as such, especially because of their external appearance or because they are difficult to access or because they are simply considered to be in bad taste.
