For 177 million euros, the Alstom corporation, an expert in the manufacture of trains and ships, plans to complete in three years the first units of the ten shuttle convoys that will link the center of Barcelona with El Prat (terminals T1 and T2).

The multinational is working on behalf of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat, FGC, who will operate the line. And toThe company is currently working at its facilities in Santa Perpètua de la Mogoda, a municipality in Catalonia in the Vallés Occidental region.

The contract, which increased to 177 million euros, includes the design, manufacture, supply and maintenance of ten state-of-the-art convoys over a 15-year period.

The company also announced that it will build a new 3,000-square-meter workshop at the Santa Perpètua industrial center. This space will be for the exclusive use of the project, particularly in relation to preventive and corrective maintenance of the fleet during the concession years.

Trains will link the center of Barcelona with El Prat

Alstom has been working steadily with Jordi Puigneró, Vice President and Minister of Polítiques Digitals i Territori, to define the details of the design of the trains.

In fact, Puigneró stated that the convoys will have a frequency of 15 minutes, which will make it possible to connect terminals T1 and T2 of the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.

The line, which will connect Barcelona with the air terminal, will be able to mobilize a passenger traffic of close to 10 million users per year. These calculations were made by FGC, while the infrastructure works are still in progress.

Alstom’s Coradia model

This type of train is being manufactured to cover these lines to El Prat. In fact, it is a model that is already in circulation in countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Canada and the Netherlands.

They consist of five one-story cars. It has a capacity for 600 passengers and can reach a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

The design contemplates integrating numerous spaces for luggage storage, as well as wider aisles, all according to the specific needs that travelers may have.

On the other hand, Marta Subirà, president of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat, explained that the new trains will be developed following very specific eco-design criteria.

In addition, this train model seeks to achieve maximum weight reduction in order to minimize consumption. And the best part is that they are manufactured with materials that are 96% recyclable.

The company is leading solutions towards greener and smarter mobility around the world. Alstom is a French corporation that is also a leader in the power generation business. It is present in more than 70 countries on different continents.
