In 2023 TMB buses will be equipped with video surveillance

It was recently announced that all buses of Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona, TMB, will have video surveillance by 2023. Y To achieve this goal, the network already has 170 vehicles (of the 1135 in service) with security cameras installed.

It should be noted that a total of 4,500 devices are planned to be installed, i.e. between two and seven per bus.

The video surveillance cameras are of the latest generation, which are intended to capture as many images as possible of what happens inside each bus.

The goal is to have them installed by April 2023. However, it is expected to overcome the distribution problems of some camera components that are not available.

Video surveillance for TMB buses

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona has invested 12 million euros. Ninety percent of these resources come from European Next Generation funds.

In addition to the cameras, this money will also be used to implement new information systems to improve the safety of drivers and passengers.

Surveillance will help prevent criminal and uncivic acts, such as, for example, sneaking into the toilet without paying.
It will also

It will also enable the authorities to respond more effectively and react to thefts, fights, sexual assaults, accidents or health problems.

The camera control center

From the TMB Control Center it will be possible to obtain high resolution images in real time.

The technology being installed is state-of-the-art and has been tested during the last 10 months in the midst of daily operations.

TMB seeks to improve camera performance thanks to the intelligent analysis system that will be incorporated.

What exactly will be visible through the cameras?

  • The hour of highest occupancy of each vehicle.
  • The level of occupancy, depending on the route or schedules.
  • Identify origin and destination patterns.

Strategic calculations for service improvement will be made using algorithms.

The cameras that Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona had used before were manual and with very low quality images.
These

have not a good range and to download them, they must first be viewed on a screen.

As the resolution was not good, it was very difficult to identify perpetrators or the details of a scene.

Instead, the cameras that will continue to be installed are high quality cameras (1080p Full HD) that can be of great use in police investigations.

The system allows coverage of the entire bus and even has the option to zoom in and out.

Another advantage is that the videos are received in real time directly at the bus security control center located in Sant Andreu.

And finally, in the event of any incident inside the bus, drivers can notify the control center at the push of a button and view the images via streaming.
