Eleven donkeys reduce the risk of fire in Collserola

The Collserola mountain range has new inhabitants. Eleven donkeys will be used to reduce the risk of fires in the mountains. The animals were released at Masía Can Domènech, in Valldoreix, as an anti-fire measure and to improve the biodiversity of the park.

The Barcelona City Council informed that the animals from Montserrat will be in the mountains for a year, changing spaces. In other words, they will vary the grazing area in order to clean the different points of the mountain.

The initiative was made possible thanks to the Alimentem Collserola Association.

Eleven donkeys to reduce fire risk

According to the Association, some of the donkeys had already been abandoned and others given up. The objective is that they begin to open the grass and achieve, in one year, grazing about 15 hectares. The animals are also expected to act as a springboard for the sheep, which were very effective and have already cleared much of the forest.

The arrival of these animals takes place in the midst of the danger that the Collserola mountain range faces due to the arrival of summer and the risk of fires.

In fact, the Diputació de Barcelona restricted access to the following areas due to the risk of forest fires:

  • Sant Llorenç del Munt i L’Obac Natural Park
  • Collserola mountain range
  • Coastal and Marine Mountain Ranges
  • Park to the Foix, Garraf and Olèrdola rivers
  • Part of the Montseny natural park
