Barcelona will have its first direct bike lane to the beach

Barcelona continues to focus on sustainability and urban mobility. Therefore, it is taking a new step towards a greener future with the construction of a direct bike path to the beach.

Passeig Joan de Borbó, a busy artery that connects Laietana with the beach and experiences crowds, especially during the summer, will be transformed into a friendlier space for cyclists and pedestrians.

Improvements in Barcelona’s cycling infrastructure are evident to those who have lived in the city for years.

From Paseo San Juan to other streets, bike lanes and green areas have changed traffic dynamics and encouraged the use of non-polluting vehicles. However, there are still challenges, and Passeig Joan de Borbó is one of those critical points.

Direct bike path to the beach is planned for the summer

This summer the experience of going to the beach by bicycle is expected to be safer and more pleasant, as the construction of the new bike lane on Passeig Joan de Borbó has begun. The section to be covered goes from the streets of Ginebra to Escar, connecting the Barceloneta metro stop with the sea.

The construction of this bike lane, which will take approximately five months, aims to harmoniously integrate this new bike lane into the existing infrastructure.

It will have a two-way traffic and will be attached to the coastal sidewalk, with a total width of 3.5 meters, including an additional strip of 0.5 meters for separating pieces.

This addition will not only improve mobility for cyclists, but will also contribute to pedestrian safety and promote a more sustainable environment.

The structure will have traffic lights and specific signaling, and will coexist with two bus stops with a platform. In these areas, pedestrian right-of-way will be established during the entrance and exit of buses.

Other projects for the benefit of pedestrians

In addition to the bike lane, the project includes improvements to pedestrian crossings, replacement of traffic lights, adjustments to the drainage network, relocation of a charging point for electric motorcycles and a new lighting column.

These additions and modifications will not only benefit bicyclists, but will improve the overall experience for those traveling on this busy roadway.

This bike lane adds to Barcelona’s growing bike network and paves the way for future connections. The vision is to eventually connect the coastal area with the center through the future bike lanes of Via Laietana and Passeig de Picasso.

With each new addition, Barcelona is moving towards a greener and more sustainable future, consolidating its position as a leading city in urban mobility.
