Barcelona will have 18.6 more hectares of green space by 2023

In order to promote biodiversity in the city, the Natura 2021-2030 plan contemplates a new route that seeks green management and planning. With this plan, Barcelona will have 18.6 more hectares of green space by 2023.

The plan foresees that in the first two years of its implementation, the first 18.6 hectares of the total 160 hectares proposed as the final objective will be created. To this end, forty actions will be carried out in the city.

The plan defines very well the actions to be carried out in the short, medium and long term.

The increase to the hectares of green adds to more than 20 already executed between 2019 and 2021, achieving a total of 82 actions in green spaces.

Natura Plan: more green hectares in 2023

The city successfully completed the Green and Biodiversity Plan 2013-2020, and is now making way for the Natura Plan. The main purpose of this new roadmap is to make the nature concept comprehensive and simple, capable of connecting with citizens.

It also aims to unify the values present in the city: integrating green infrastructure, soils, water, geological materials and living beings.

In fact, this orientation of the plan was born from the need of citizens to have direct contact with green spaces and the outdoors. These elements are indispensable for physical and emotional well-being and overall health.

But the most important aspect of the philosophy behind the Natura plan is that greenery plays a fundamental role in cities in reducing pollution and contributing to the fight against climate change.

Green and citizenship

The Natura plan was structured around three thematic axes and two cross-cutting areas.

First axis

Its goal is to achieve more greenery and biodiversity. This has led to the goal of achieving an additional 18.6 hectares of green space in Barcelona by 2023, in order to connect the metropolitan environment with green space.

Second axis

It refers to the conservation and enhancement of greenery and biodiversity, giving way to ecological management and promoting the naturalization of certain areas. The goal in this axis is to achieve the sustainable use of resources and protect the natural heritage, the environment and health.

Third axis

It is related to the importance of working on the green of the city from the citizens’ point of view. Barcelona welcomes citizen initiatives and takes an active role in the conservation and promotion of urban biodiversity.

This axis includes the transfer of garden plots for the elderly, the creation of community gardens and planting activities with organizations and schools.
