At least 155 slightly injured in Rodalies train crash yesterday

This Wednesday, December 7, 2022 around 8 a.m., there was a collision of two trains on the R4 Rodalies at the Montcada i Reixac-Manresa station in the direction of Barcelona. During the accident several passengers fell to the ground after the impact.

In this regard, witnesses indicated that it was a strong jolt that caused standing passengers to fall to the ground. Immediately the lights went out and screams began to be heard.

Although no serious injuries were reported, most of the 155 people affected suffered minor injuries and contusions. For the time being, there is no clear information that the train drivers are among the group of injured.

After the collision between two Rodalies trains

After the event, all passengers were removed from the trains. The evacuation lasted about 20 minutes while more than 10 ambulances, four Mossos d’Esquadra patrols and four fire trucks arrived at the scene. Rescue teams provided immediate and effective assistance to those affected.

The area where the incident occurred was cordoned off by the authorities and a triage area was set up to determine the condition of each of the injured. In fact, a queue formed with a large number of people affected.

In order to avoid an increase in the number of passengers in the queue, the Emergency Medical System (SEM) team carried out rapid examinations, giving priority to those passengers with the most serious injuries.

The slightly injured were taken to the Espai Jove Can Tauler in Jaume Balmes street. 39 of them were redirected to different health centers for treatment.

At the same time as the injured were being attended to, the passengers who were unharmed were put on a bus to continue their journey to La Sagrera station.

Delays due to the accident

For this reason, the Rodalies R4 suffered delays due to the accident and service frequency was affected with delays of 30 to 40 minutes.

Likewise, the signaling system was affected in the La Sagrera area of Barcelona, affecting the R1 commuter train and the RG1 line of regional services of the public railway operator.

For their part, the Mossos d’Esquadra are investigating the causes of the accident, in particular the speed of the train when it collided with the other train.

Raquel Sánchez, Minister of Transportation, clarified that the incident was an accident, a one-time episode that has nothing to do with the works that are being carried out to improve the service.

The Minister also pointed out that this collision between two trains was a collision between a stopped train and another train that was braking with the train in sight, an action that is frequently carried out in the system’s stations.
