Adaptation of “The Alchemist” comes to Teatre Nacional de Catalunya

Adaptation of

The Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC) premieres a new version of The Alchemist, a play based on the novel The Œuvre au noir by Marguerite Yourcenar, adapted and directed by Michael de Cock.

The piece is set in Flanders in 1500 and narrates the last years of the life of Zenon, a physician and alchemist.

At a time of profound crisis and transition, Europe transcends its history between the darkness of the Middle Ages and the light of the Renaissance, generating a dystopian Europe.

Yourcenar’s work is a reflection on life, humanity and freedom, dreaming of a more united, more humane and freer future.

Yourcenar’s text is ambitious, poetic and philosophical, and offers many opportunities on stage because of its structure.

De Cock is very excited to bring the story of the alchemist Zeno to the TNC and has assembled a wonderful team with people from Belgium, France and Catalonia, for a true “play” in every sense.

“El Alquimista” until mid-June at the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya

The production of the Theater is the result of an interesting European collaboration, where many languages coincide and ideas mutually enrich each other.

To recreate the streets of 16th century Bruges, the scenography was conceived so that water would play a predominant role.

However, out of ecological responsibility and the TNC’s commitment to the country’s sustainability, they decided not to fill the stage floor with water and replace its poetic effect with video and smoke.

The only thing is that they use a minimum amount of water, which is recycled and reused every day for other uses.

“The Alchemist” is a play not to be missed by those looking for a story that makes them reflect on humanity and freedom in a world in crisis.

Michael De Cock’s adaptation, in collaboration with a team of European artists, promises a fascinating theatrical experience that will leave no one indifferent.

In addition, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya’s commitment to sustainability and the responsible use of water in set design are examples of how art and culture can be tools to promote a more sustainable world committed to the environment.
