Plusfresc Supermarkets to open three new branches in Barcelona

With an investment of 15 million euros as part of an expansion plan, Plusfresc supermarkets plans to open three more new locations in Barcelona.

The Catalan chain, specialized in fresh produce, wants to continue growing in Catalonia through a far-reaching expansion plan, which will also focus on Lleida and the coast of Tarragona and on modernizing existing establishments.

But the main focus is on Barcelona, which currently has six locations employing some 130 workers. The objective is to increase the number of stores to nine over the next three years, thanks to the three new stores to be opened in the Catalan capital.

The goal is to open one new one per year. The new sites will be located in uptown neighborhoods.

Plusfesc: three new locations in Barcelona

Plusfresc wants to grow further in Catalonia, especially in Lleida where it was founded and has achieved a market share of 21.6%. The supermarket chain has a total of 85 stores, of which more than 75% are located in its home province.

The expansion plan will be financed with the company’s own resources. And the estimated 15 million euros of investment will be distributed for the new premises (between 10.5 and 12 million euros) and the hiring of 180 workers.

The remainder of the budget will be used to refurbish existing facilities.

Plusfresc Via Augusta 188

One of the Plusfresc supermarkets that has benefited the most from this investment was the Via Augusta 188 supermarket opened in 2014 and the first that the chain had in Barcelona.

In fact, the investment for this store was similar to the cost of opening a new supermarket.

Plusfresc at Via Augusta 188 has a surface area of 1,200 square meters that have been redistributed. The frescoes are now located on the upper floor and new services are being added.

Among them, the possibility of making the purchase by scanning the bar codes of the products with the cell phone (Scan & Go process). So far this service has a cost of 1.5 euros, which is returned to the buyer by means of a discount voucher.

Another novelty of the Vía Augusta restaurant is the incorporation of an oven in the fishmonger’s shop, so you can take the fish and seafood completely ready for consumption and for the same price.

It also has a space for bulk products, such as nuts, cereals, rice and legumes. Additionally, it has a creamery with more than 300 references of cheese and specialized advisors to guide your purchase.

Each of the innovations has undergone quality tests before being launched to the public at Plusfresc’s Sunka store in Lleida.
