Sailing America's Cup date confirmed: August 22, 2024

From all the beaches of Barcelona, the great event of the America’s Cup of Sailing, which will start on August 22, 2024, will be visible.

Thanks to the speed of the work in the city, the spaces at the Port of Barcelona will be ready and available next April for the five teams to start building their bases.

The 37th edition of the America’s Cup will begin on August 22, 2024 with the pre-races for the competitions starting in September. The competitions will be used to decide who will compete for the cup from October 12 to 27.

America’s Cup Sailing 2024

The announcement of the start date of the Cup was made by Grant Dalton, CEO of the event, at the Museu Marítim de Barcelona and in the presence of the Mayoress of Barcelona and the Minister of Enterprise and Labor of the Generalitat.

Also present were the first vice-president of the Diputació de Barcelona, the Government delegate in Catalonia and the president of the Port of Barcelona.

Dalton added that the advances that have already been made in the infrastructure and preparation of the competition are very important. He also detailed the calendar of the competition and explained that the teams are ready to be installed in the bases of the spaces installed in the Port, which is expected to take place before the summer of 2023.

Initially it was estimated that the installation would be completed by the beginning of 2024, but thanks to teamwork, it will be completed earlier than expected. All indications are that six youth teams and six women’s teams are already registered and more are applying to enter the competition, including a Spanish team.

The value of the event for Barcelona

The America’s Sailing Cup will leave a great legacy and contribution to the city, just as the Olympic Games did in 1992. As contributions, it is important to highlight the strengthening of the sense of belonging to the city, the participation of volunteers, and the execution of works in the Port. In addition to the economic and image contributions that the Cup brings to Barcelona.

Another novelty is that the logo of the sporting event, designed by the Barcelona-based studio

includes the “B” for Barcelona in bold type, which is a first for a headquarters.

The only thing that remains to be defined is the exact orientation and location of the race course for the final of the competition, which will surely be between the Port Olímpic and the Hotel Vela.

The confirmed fact is that regattas can be held 200 meters from the beach due to the depth and the favorable wind direction. All this suggests that spectators will be able to enjoy the show free of charge.
