La Pedrera: 9 things to know about this emblematic building

Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera, is considered a total work of art. It is a building built by the great architect Antoni Gaudí commissioned by Pere Milà and Roser Segimon.

The initial name of the building was due to the fact that it was the new residence of the Milà family. At the beginning, the couple lived on the main floor and rented the rest of the apartments.

Later it became better known as “La Pedrera” because its exterior façade resembles an open-air quarry with forms taken from nature.

8 things to know about La Pedrera building

Even if you live in the city, you may know that the only thing you know about this work of art is that it is called La Casa Milà or that it is better known as La Pedrera de Barcelona. Or as much as it is one of Gaudí’s most outstanding creations. However, we will tell you some curiosities about the building.

It is said that the French politician George Clemenceau had planned to give a speech in the city, but when he saw the majesty of the building, he refused to do so. He was amazed and found it incredible that people could live in a place like this.

2. Clemenceau was not the only public figure to be impacted by the creation. In fact, many magazines of the time made jokes about this architectural work, although Dalí came out to defend the architect’s creation.

3. In addition to being a popular tourist site over the years, La Pedrera has been home to a boarding house, a flea market, a bingo hall and even a brothel.

4. It was built between 1906 and 1910, but only opened to the public in 1987.

5. Before La Pedrera was erected, the building was a villa that became the dividing line between Barcelona and Gracia, municipalities that only until 1897 were considered different from each other.

6. Despite the fact that at the time the City Council stopped the construction of La Pedrera, Gaudí continued with the work. The City Council claimed that the works did not respect the agreed measures.

7. Curiously and only during its rehabilitation, it was discovered that the building had a subway bunker to protect itself from bombing during the Civil War.

8. In spite of the years and the passing of time, epochs and customs, the most outstanding thing about La Pradera is that it is still inhabited by people.
