Barcelona will have no artificial island or futuristic hotel

The company Mobilona intended to build an artificial island in the middle of the coast of Barcelona and then create a futuristic hotel 300 meters high. The hotel is the one you can see in the image.

The project presented included a 2,000-room luxury hotel, a 24-hour shopping mall, a small port designed to dock yachts of up to 200 meters, luxury apartments, a heliport and other extremely extravagant attractions, such as a vertical wind tunnel.

In addition to Barcelona, Dubai, Hong Kong and Los Angeles have been other cities chosen to present this project. And maybe in some of them it fits with the philosophy of the city, but it seems that it does not fit with what Barcelona is and pretends to be.

The mayor’s statements regarding the rejection of this project in the city have been forceful: “We have no intention whatsoever of turning the city into a spectacle. Barcelona is a city of culture, creativity, knowledge and innovation; however, our city project does not follow that path”.
The Barcelona City Council finds it a very attractive and interesting project, but considers it to be more appropriate to the Dubai style; it has little to do with the current urban development of the city.

It is clear that Barcelona will not have an artificial island or a futuristic hotel, but perhaps another city will host this project… We will have to wait and see.

What do you think, would you have liked this hotel to be built in Barcelona or do you agree with the City Council’s decision?
