A turtle on the runway caused the closure of Barcelona’s El Prat airport.

The presence of a turtle inside the airfield of Barcelona’s El Prat airport forced the temporary closure of the infrastructure during the afternoon of last Sunday. Two flights were delayed due to the situation. Authorities reported that they carried out the necessary tasks to ensure the safety of the operations, as well as the integrity of the animal.

It was reported that the reptile was sighted by the crew of an airplane on runway 24R at El Prat airport. As a result, the team of airport controllers ordered a temporary closure of the airport in order to control the situation.

The closure caused the delay of the arrival of two flights that should have arrived at El Prat. One of the affected flights came from Granada, while the other came from Palma de Mallorca.

Following the turtle sighting, the Catalan airport authorities coordinated actions to rescue the animal. Although the exact details of the reptile are not specified, it was reported that it was of such a good size that it warranted the closure of temporary operations.

In turn, those responsible for information that the turtle had been brought to safety and the airport returned to normal operations. The affected flights, which were scheduled to arrive minutes before 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, landed shortly after operations were reactivated. Local media reported that flight delays were between ten and fifteen minutes. The affected flights were Vueling flight VY2013 from Granada and Air Europa flight UX6072 from Palma de Mallorca.
