Travel records broken on Barcelona's metro network

The Barcelona metro has broken records in terms of passengers, registering a significant increase in the number of validations.

Both on a weekday and on a public holiday, the public transport network has experienced a notable increase in the number of passengers.

These records demonstrate the growing demand for transportation services in the city, surpassing even pre-pandemic levels.

Historic working day: 1,523,900 validations on the Barcelona Metro

Friday, April 21, 2023 will go down in history as the working day with the highest number of validations in the Barcelona metro.

During that day, a total of 1,523,900 million validations were recorded on the eight metro lines. This record surpasses the previous all-time high, set on October 14, 2019, with 1,504,848 validations.

It is clear that the number of passengers has increased significantly compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Success on public holidays: Sant Jordi also sets a new record

For its part, on Sunday, April 23, Sant Jordi’s Day, the Barcelona metro network also broke records in terms of passengers during a public holiday.

A total of 1,206,300 validations were recorded, which is attributed to the combination of the mobility generated by the Sant Jordi celebration and the La Liga match between Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona.

Most of the displacements were concentrated in the center of the city, where there was a wide range of cultural and leisure activities related to Sant Jordi.

Upward trend in the Barcelona metro and on buses

The data indicate a growing trend in the use of public transport in Barcelona. Both metro and bus are recording a steady increase in the number of validations, which started in 2022 and has been maintained in 2023.

During the past month of March, an all-time record was reached with 40.3 million validations, surpassing the number recorded in March 2019 by three million.

These data reflect a 21% growth compared to the same period last year and an increase of two million validations compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Thus, in April, the Barcelona metro set new records in terms of validations, both on weekdays and holidays.

The notable increase in ridership reflects the growing demand for public transportation services in the city.

In fact, TMB’s metro and bus networks have already been showing an upward trend since 2022, which continues to grow so far in 2023.

Inhabitants and visitors to Barcelona show that they increasingly prefer to use public transport for their journeys.
