The Santa Mònica, arts center and climate refuge in Raval

In the heart of Barcelona, a unique art installation is captivating residents and visitors alike. It is “ALPHA, Climate Shelter for Humans and Birds”, a bubblegum pink structure that has transformed the Santa Monica terrace into a climate shelter.

This innovative creation by design and architecture studio TAKK aims to make the terrace more comfortable and welcoming for both humans and the various species of birds that flit around the capital.

This initiative is part of the #RavalEstiuEducatiu project, which seeks to turn spaces in the Raval into climate shelters to combat the heat island effect.

This phenomenon occurs when asphalt and concrete in urban areas increase the ambient temperature up to 8°C higher than in the surrounding rural areas.

The impact on the quality of life of people and species living in these areas is significant, especially during the hot summer months.

A fusion between art and climate shelter in Raval

The Santa Monica shelter, which will be available until September this year, stands out for its striking bubblegum pink color. However, its design goes beyond aesthetics and focuses on creating a fresh and pleasant space.

The facility’s large canopy provides shade and houses branches and natural elements that birds can use to build nests in the higher parts of the structure.

At the center of the refuge is a garden designed to attract insects and pollinators, which helps to refresh the environment.

The best gyms in Barcelona Are you up for it?

Surrounded by a bench, it invites the residents and passers-by of the Rambla to rest in an environment that is normally characterized by its hustle and bustle and constant consumption. It is an oasis of tranquility in the middle of the urban bustle.

The #RavalEstiuEducatiu initiative has turned 16 spaces in the Raval into climate shelters, offering free air-conditioned rest areas, wifi connection, water, areas to read, play or practice sports.

This project is an innovative and conscious response to the challenge of climate change and seeks to improve the quality of life of the city’s inhabitants.

An inspiring model

The installation “ALPHA, Climate Shelter for Humans and Birds” is an inspiring example of how art and architecture can contribute to creative solutions to environmental challenges.

It goes beyond being just a visually stunning work of art and becomes a functional space that responds to the needs of the community and raises awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting our environment.

With this initiative, the Santa Mònica and the #RavalEstiuEducatiuEducatiu project demonstrate Barcelona’s commitment to sustainability and the search for innovative solutions to address climate challenges.
