The best sustainable campsite in Europe is in Catalonia

A campsite on the Costa Brava was named the best sustainable campsite in Europe. The recognition was awarded by the ADAC, the largest German automobile association in Europe, as part of the ADAC Camping Awards. Something like the “Oscars of camping”.

40 experts in the camping sector, who were part of an international commission, were in charge of selecting the winners in each category of the awards:

  • Sustainability and Environmental Awareness
  • Innovation and Development
  • Demographic Change and Accessibility
  • ADAC Camping Booking

Catalonia won the award for the best sustainable campsite in Europe

The winner is the campsite “La Ballena Alegre” in Sant Pere Pescador, in the Alt Empordà. They were awarded for their success in reducing their ecological footprint and for being the most environmentally friendly and sustainable campsite in Europe.

This is demonstrated by their management, which saves more than 100 tons of CO2 per year.

They beat out competition from other nominated campsites including the Danish Blokhus Natur Camping and the Dutch Ons Buiten.

The jury considered that “La Ballena Alegre” stood out for its “holistic approach” to the site that succeeds very well in integrating modernity and luxury with sustainable environmental protection.

Five star bungalows

This five-star campsite offers different services to its clients.

They offer their guests to stay in bungalows, a very comfortable and accessible one-story house style.

They are solar-powered, almost self-sufficient in energy and have 14 geothermal boreholes for cooling or heating water. The energy resulting from cooling is used to air-condition other areas of the enclosure.

Offer of bungalows:

Until 1/10/2022: 7 x 5 two free days per week (days are discounted on the lower rate).

Winners in the other categories were:

Centro Vacanze Pra’ delle Torri, Italy: Innovation and Development category.

It is a modern resort located near Venice with an innovative recreational offer. The most recent is the creation of the activity park adapted to meet the needs of young campers.

Also nominated in this category were Camping Nature Parc L’Ardéchois in France and La Rocca Camp in Italy.

50plus Campingpark Fisching, Austria: category Demographic Change and Accessibility.

It offers an ambitious concept aimed at a specific segment of the population: campers over 50 years of age and the needs they may have.

The campground is managed by the Pfandl family from Styria, who did not have an easy time winning. It competed in this category with Strandcamping Waging am See from Germany and Camping Salatà from Spain.
