The best city to live in according to expats is Spanish: but it's not Barcelona

InterNations, the world’s largest expatriate community, annually ranks the best places to work and live and the best quality of life.

This is the Expat City Ranking 2022 report. The novelty is that this year within the TOP 10 of this ranking there are two Spanish cities, but neither is Barcelona.

The first place in the worldwide list was occupied by Valencia and fifth place by Madrid. But as the list goes on, Barcelona is in 14th place.

The fact that Valencia has achieved the first place in the list makes it the best city in the world to live and work. It is followed by Dubai in second place and Mexico in third.

The remaining positions to complete the top 10 cities follow in their order: Lisbon, Madrid with an honorable fifth place, Bangkok, Basel, Melbourne, Abu Dhabi and Singapore.

Why does Valencia rank first according to expatriates?

For InterNations, Valencia topped the overall list because it ranked number one in quality of life.

What expatriates value most in this Spanish city is the city’s public transportation, safety and recreational sports opportunities.

Another reason it was chosen was because of the ease of settling in to live there. Expatriates stated that they felt at home and are happy with the social life they lead in the city.

Valencia also ranked first in cost of living and third in personal finances.

The only areas in which Valencia did not do well were in the working abroad index (ranked 41st out of 50) and the job projection index (ranked last).
