New vehicles will have to incorporate Advanced Driving Aid Systems

As of July 6, 2024, all newly registered vehicles will be required to incorporate a series of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS), including Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA).

With the entry into force of new regulations by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), drivers must prepare for important changes in driving and vehicle safety systems.

This measure, established by European Union regulation, aims to improve road safety and reduce the risk of accidents on the roads.

Advanced Driving Aid Systems

These ADAS systems not only represent technological advances in the automotive industry, but also aim to improve road safety and reduce the incidence of accidents. Among the systems recommended by the DGT are:

    • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): This system allows you to maintain a constant speed on the highway and automatically adjust the distance to the vehicle in front, which is especially useful for long highway trips.
    • Emergency Stop Assist: Designed to detect situations in which the driver does not respond adequately, this system can bring the vehicle to a safe stop in case of emergency, thus avoiding possible collisions or serious accidents.
    • Lane Departure Warning: This system alerts the driver when the vehicle unintentionally deviates from its lane, helping to prevent accidents caused by distractions or drowsiness at the wheel.
    • Forward Collision Warning (FCW): Using sensors and cameras, this system detects the possibility of an imminent frontal collision and alerts the driver to take corrective action in time, thus reducing the risk of accidents.
    • Emergency Braking Automatic (EBA): This technology complements the forward collision warning system, since in case of driver non-response, it can automatically activate the brakes to avoid or mitigate the impact, even in situations where pedestrians, cyclists or other vehicles are detected.

The benefits of ADAS

These systems not only improve the safety of the driver and vehicle occupants, but also contribute to the protection of other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists. It is important that drivers are familiar with these new technologies and understand how they work in order to take full advantage of their benefits.

Although the implementation of these systems may represent an additional cost for vehicle manufacturers, their benefit in terms of road safety is unquestionable.

Therefore, it is essential that drivers are informed about the importance of these systems and consider their inclusion when purchasing a new vehicle.

With the implementation of these measures, it is expected to reduce the incidence of traffic accidents.
