Sant Andreu Station to inaugurate the largest railway mural in Spain

The largest railway mural in the state will be inaugurated on December 11, 2022. It has about 200 linear meters and a little more than 3,000 square meters.

It is a true work of urban art, the largest in the entire Adif network and will be located in the Nou Baixador de Sant Andreu. But it is unusual for a mural to be so large, especially considering that it will be inside a railway station.

The mural will show a chronological review of the history of the railroad both in Catalonia and Barcelona. Next to each of the 11 blocks (one block for each year of chronology), a brief description of the historical event to which it refers will be inserted.

For its part, Adif is also considering the possibility of including QR codes for those users who are more curious and want to know more historical details.

The largest railway mural

The mural is the work of artists Roc Blackblok and Miquel Wert, who jointly submitted their proposal to Rebobinart, the production company that won the public tender called at the time by Adif.

The work process has focused on distributing the mural in 11 years of chronology, selecting a block for each historical event highlighted over time.

Therefore, the two artists divided the eleven years in total (one for each historical milestone chosen), which, in order to be able to inaugurate it in December, has implied an arduous and intense work.

The advantage they had was associated with good weather and the use of acrylic paint for exteriors, not spray.

And it is not the first time that Rebobinart intervenes in the railway field. They have already painted three Tram stations in the past and plan to paint a fourth.

For his part, the technical coordinator of Adif’s Sagrera-Sant Andreu operation indicates that the objective is to “excite the traveler” and that through the mural the personality of the station can be appreciated as a unique and unrepeatable model.

Some history of the station

Sant Andreu opened in 1854, making it the oldest station in Spain that is still in operation.

The mural will then be the best way to narrate the chronological facts of the history of the railroad in Barcelona and Catalonia.

Its history began in 1848 with the launching of the first peninsular line linking Mataró with Barcelona.

Now, as a tribute to all the history that has passed through these walls, rails and trains, the mural, the largest urban artwork in the entire Adif network, will be unveiled.

It should be noted that this mural is not compared to graffiti.
