Mercat de la Sagrada Família reopens its doors after modernization of its facilities

The Mercat de la Sagrada Família, an icon in Barcelona that has witnessed historic changes in the city, has reopened its doors after a modernization that has been carried out without delays in its planned schedule.

This market, known for offering high-quality fresh produce, has faced challenges over the years, but its recent renovation promises a brighter and more sustainable future.

The Mercat de la Sagrada Família has been one of the oldest and most emblematic markets in Barcelona. Its last major renovation occurred 30 years ago, just in time for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Since then, the market has continued to operate, but the need for modernization became evident.

Despite the challenges and complexities of the renovation, the market workers have managed to complete the work on schedule, which is a significant feat.

During the three weeks that it was closed to carry out the most complicated part of the works, the merchants found themselves under a new temporary roof, which allowed them to continue serving their customers while the works continued.

The director of municipal markets, Pere Sirvent, explained that the modernization aims not only to improve the market infrastructure, but also to make it more sustainable.

The project includes the installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof, which will help to thermally insulate the interior of the market and will generate around 25% of the energy needed for its operation.

This focus on sustainability is essential in a world increasingly concerned with energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction.

History and reinvention

The Mercat de la Sagrada Família has a fascinating history. It occupies the site of the General Motors factory in Barcelona between 1932 and 1939, where iconic vehicles such as the Chevrolet 3.4, which was used as a means of transportation during the Spanish Civil War, were manufactured.

After the war, the authorities decided to close the factory and the space was converted into a fresh produce market.

In 1973, the market was officially inaugurated and in 1993, it underwent an ambitious renovation. Despite the lack of visibility from the street due to its location between a municipal library and a civic center, the market has maintained its offer of high quality products and continues to be a point of reference in the neighborhood.

The modernization of the Mercat de la Sagrada Família not only represents a new beginning for this emblematic market, but also a commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement for the benefit of the community.

The iconic market offers a wide variety of fresh produce for locals and tourists alike.
