Fashion and iconic film costumes at Caixaforum Barcelona

Fashion shows and cinematic fashion is what brings the exhibition Fashion and Cinema Caixaforum Barcelona, which will be open to the public until October 23. And the author of the best iconic pieces of cinema on display is the designer Jean Paul Gaultier, who with his designs managed to transform the CaixaForum into a visual explosion.

Their dresses are the way to relive movie scenes that many visitors have engraved in their minds and retinas. You will be able to see, among others, universal classic dresses such as those of “The Rear Window” or “A Streetcar Named Desire”.

But if you want to enjoy something more recent, you can see the costumes of “The Mask of Zorro” or “Bad Education” by Almodovar.

The exhibition Cinema and Fashion provides an insight into the close relationship between fashion and cinema, Gaultier’s main influence.

If you plan to visit the exhibition, you will be able to appreciate the influence of cinema on the designer’s career. He shows more than 100 pieces, among them, some of the corsets he designed for Madonna.

It includes a total of 70 looks accompanied by excerpts from 90 films and countless photographs, posters and stills.

Gaultier’s dresses are also accompanied by others from designers such as Hubert de Givenchy, Coco Chanel, Balenciaga, Pierre Cardin and Manuel Pertegaz.

The exhibition is distributed in five spaces, with a circular approach and always maintaining a catwalk-like staging. The exhibition arrived in Barcelona after having been in Madrid and Paris.

A tour through the cinema

The exhibition of Cinema and fashion by Jean Paul Gaultier, begins with the early influences of the designer, very marked by his grandparents.

In the first room you will be able to appreciate the costumes of the 1945 melodrama “Falbalas de Jacques Becker”, with veils, dresses and allusive scenes.

In this section there are also corsets, garments very typical of the French designer’s style. And he owes this inclination to his grandmother who was a nurse and from there, Gaultier began to appreciate this magnificent piece of underwear and its potential to be shown. It is a liberating element for women.

Following the tour, the exhibition leads to a paradise for movie buffs, where you can see scenes from different movies and a whole mix of costumes.

They were carefully chosen to show the evolution of gender roles on screens. There you can see a static parade of femmes fatales such as Marilyn Monroe and one of the dresses she wore in “Naked Eve”. Also outfits of Sara Montiel, Rita Hayworth or Sharon Stone (in fact, it’s the dress from Low Instincts, yes).

You will also find manly cowboys like John Wayne or the outfits of the famous Sylvester Stallone.
