Electric trucks and new machinery for garbage collection

Electric trucks and new machinery for garbage collection

Barcelona debuts electric garbage trucks, containers and other equipment to keep the city clean.

This will increase the fleet of electric vehicles from 20% to 66%, bringing the total to 870 trucks.

The fleet has soundproofed equipment that reduces the noise levels of the collection service, thus improving acoustic comfort.

The trucks also have cameras that will give the driver better visibility to avoid accidents and run-overs.

They also have audiovisual signals that alert the driver to any risk in the presence of motorcycles, cyclists, pedestrians located in the blind spot zone.

In addition to electric trucks, waste containers

Barcelona will have new garbage containers with better access and visibility to citizens, as they are lower.

They will be of different sizes, more flexible and adapted to the changes and dynamics of the city.

They may be adapted to the street where they are located. They will have holes of sizes adapted to the waste to be disposed of in each container.

The first districts to benefit from March 2022 with this new model of waste container distribution and comprehensive maintenance of the city are the districts of: Ciutat Vella, L’Eixample, Gràcia, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí.

Subsequently, and starting in September, the coverage will be extended to the rest of the city.

Also included are other acquisitions such as smaller sweepers for bike routes.

The new cleaning and waste collection contract will have a duration of eight years, with a total investment of 2.3 billion euros.
