The first public application through which you can order a cab in Barcelona has been launched. This is the mobile app AMB Mobilitat, to which more than 10,000 cab drivers in the Catalan capital must be linked.
The App covers Barcelona and its metropolitan area. It was a tool that had been in demand since 2016 in order to compete with other apps that have been emerging in recent years, such as Taxi Ecològic, FreeNow or Cabify.
Through the mobile application AMB Mobilitat, it will be possible to access the “Picmi Taxi” service. The App was developed by the Institut Metropolità del Taxi , Imet, and the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona, AMB, so that users can order a cab through their cell phone.
This service is a great help for both passengers and cab drivers, because it no longer depends on the customer seeing the cab driver, but on the availability on the App. The technological initiative had an investment of 200,000 euros.
How does the mobile App work to order a cab in Barcelona?
It works in a similar way to other cab ordering services (such as Cabify). With this tool it is possible to digitize the entire cab fleet.
Thus, the more than 10 thousand cabs active in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona will have to compulsorily download the new App. And with this, users will be able to access a large volume of vehicles and reduce waiting times.
In order for users to use the new application, they must first download the AMB Mobilitat mobile application.
Once installed, you will have access to the Picmi Taxi service. This service will be available in the 36 metropolitan municipalities.
Those who already have AMB Mobilitat (so far there are about 175,000 people), only need to update the application to incorporate the new functionality.
When you enter the App you only have to order the cab and you can choose between a standard or a large one, even adapted to people with reduced mobility.
Immediately, the application will geolocate your location and send the alert to the nearest cab drivers in the area. In this way it will assign the ride to the nearest cab taking into account the time of arrival to the user or if they are parked at a nearby cab stand.
If the user is in an area without cabs, the application will refer the user to a radio station.
Once the application has chosen the cab driver closest to the location, you can accept or reject the cab.
Other advantages
Another advantage is that you can also check the approximate fare, the duration of the trip according to traffic conditions and cab information (license plate number and vehicle model). You will also be notified when the cab arrives at the pick-up point.
