Aena boosts energy sustainability with new photovoltaic plants at airports in Catalonia

In an effort to move towards energy sustainability and reduce its environmental footprint, Aena has announced a major investment in solar photovoltaic plants at two of its main airports in Catalonia.

With a total investment of 32.9 million euros, these new facilities will mark a milestone in the public company’s commitment to the environment and renewable energy.

The first of these solar plants will be located at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, with an installed capacity of 12.5 megawatt peak (MWp). This facility, which will be located within the airport grounds, will generate an amount of energy equivalent to the consumption of approximately 5,790 homes.

This project will not only contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, but will also position the airport as a leader in energy sustainability in the region.

On the other hand, Reus Airport will also receive a solar photovoltaic plant with a total installed capacity of 15 MWp. This facility, which will be integrated within the airport grounds, will have the capacity to generate energy equivalent to the consumption of some 7,600 homes.

With this initiative, Aena demonstrates its commitment to adopting clean and efficient technologies to power its operations and reduce its environmental impact.

The contract for the construction of these solar plants has been awarded to the joint venture (UTE) formed by Acciona Construcción and Tecmo Instalaciones Obras y Servicios.

This contract includes the design, construction, commissioning and initial maintenance for one year for both facilities.

The construction process is expected to be completed within three years, which will allow these plants to come on line in the near future.

The investment in these solar plants is part of Aena’s strategy to move towards energy self-sufficiency from renewable sources and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to generating clean energy for its operations, Aena plans to use the surplus energy produced to obtain its own guarantees of origin, which will be used for the rest of its airports in Catalonia.

This ambitious project will not only help Aena meet its environmental commitments, but will also contribute to meeting the European Union’s goals for reducing emissions and transitioning to a more sustainable economy.

With the implementation of these solar plants, Aena positions itself as a leader in energy sustainability within the airport sector and lays the foundations for a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.
