With a budget of $161 million, 3,100 social rental housing units will be constructed

The Government is earmarking 161 million euros for the construction of 3,100 social rental housing units in Catalonia, as part of a project promoted by the European Union’s Next Generation funds.

These homes will be distributed in 38 municipalities, including the city of Barcelona, where 603 units will be built.

The call for grants launched by the Department of Territory of the Government aims to prioritize 82 previously selected projects, submitted by municipalities and third social sector organizations.

These social rental housing units, which must be completed before June 2026, will be classified as officially protected housing for an indefinite period of time and will be for rent or transfer of use.

The subsidy granted is up to 700 euros per square meter of usable area, with a maximum of 50,000 euros per dwelling built.

The total number of dwellings may vary and increase as grant amounts are finalized and funds are released for new projects.

These homes are expected to have an average area of 75 square meters and are intended for people with low incomes, which do not exceed four times the Sufficiency Income Index of Catalonia.

Where social rental housing will be located

The geographical distribution of the selected projects covers different regions of Catalonia.

In Barcelona, 45 actions will be carried out with the construction of 1,910 homes.

Other areas include central Catalonia (7 actions and 192 homes), Penedès (9 actions and 333 homes), Girona (10 actions and 270 homes), Lleida (7 actions and 175 homes), Camp de Tarragona (2 actions and 208 homes) and Terres de l’Ebre (2 actions and 28 homes).

In the selection of the projects, it has been taken into account that they are located in municipalities with a high demand for housing and more than 25% of the development has been reserved for young people under 35 years of age.

In addition, priority has been given to people in emergency situations, people with intellectual disabilities and vulnerable groups at risk of social exclusion.

Also to refugees, people over 65 years of age, women victims of domestic and gender violence, and victims of terrorism, among other circumstances.

This initiative is part of the Government’s efforts to address the need for affordable and permanent social rental housing in Catalonia.

Through the use of Next Generation funds, the project seeks to promote the construction of affordable rental housing that will contribute to improving the housing situation in the region.

Developers interested in participating in the call will have a period of five or six months, depending on whether they already have the building rights, to submit their applications and the corresponding documentation.

In the event that any of the short-listed projects do not apply, priority will be given to the projects on the waiting list.

The objective is to improve the quality of life of many families.
