Solar eclipses to be seen in Catalonia during the next decade

Lovers of astronomy and celestial events are in luck, since during the next decade three solar eclipses can be witnessed in Catalonia.

These astronomical phenomena, which occur when the moon totally or partially covers the sun, are unique opportunities to contemplate an impressive natural spectacle.

The first of these eclipses will take place on March 29, 2025 in Barcelona, although it will be seen as a partial eclipse. To enjoy a total solar eclipse, we will have to wait a little longer.

The last time the Iberian Peninsula experienced a total solar eclipse was in 1905, more than a century ago. Therefore, these upcoming solar eclipses will be historic events not to be missed.

The eclipses of the next decade

The first total solar eclipse of the decade will occur on August 12, 2026, during the summer and in the late afternoon. It will be visible along a band extending from Galicia to the Valencian Community.

For about one minute, the moon will completely cover the sun, turning day into night. To witness this spectacle, it is recommended to look for a place without mountains and close to the sea.

In Catalonia, the best locations will be Tarragona and Terres de l’Ebre, although it can also be enjoyed in cities such as Castellón de la Plana and Palma.

The following year, on August 2, 2027,the second solar eclipse of the decade will occur. It will also take place during the evening hours, which will add an even more spectacular touch to the event.

On this occasion, the area of visibility will be smaller, covering mainly the regions of Cadiz, Malaga and Almeria. It will also be seen in 98% in other capitals of Andalusia. For those who wish to live it to the fullest, Ceuta, Melilla or Tangier are ideal destinations.

In January 2028, an annular solar eclipse will occur, offering a unique visual experience. Because the moon will be farther away from the Earth, it will not completely cover the sun, creating a bright and captivating ring.

This phenomenon can be observed from several points of the peninsula, including Terres de l’Ebre, Tarragona and even some municipalities of the Baix Penedès. Valencia will also offer good visibility during this annular eclipse.

Precautions when observing eclipses

It is important to remember that during the observation of a solar eclipse, it is essential to protect the eyes adequately to avoid damage to the retina. In addition, we should take advantage of these unique opportunities, as the next annular eclipse visible in Barcelona will not occur until 2059.

The next decade brings a series of extraordinary celestial events in Catalonia. These solar eclipses invite us to marvel at the beauty and majesty of the universe.

Make sure you are prepared to witness these celestial spectacles.
