Paradise Lost, an epic poem by John Milton, now in theater.

Until December 4, 2022 at the Teatre Romea, El Raval, John Milton’s epic 17th century poem “Paradise Lost” comes to the stage.

And it is quite a feat to bring to the stage this poem that tells the story of the God-Satan relationship and the subsequent fall of the devil from heaven.

The play reflects the dramaturgy of Helena Tornero, under the direction of Andrés Lima. An integrated work that offers the public a total show full of action, ideas, songs and music.

It is a staging where it is possible to make a trip to the place of the other, letting oneself be crossed by Milton’s poetry to discover that in each one of us there is a part of angel, devil, man, woman, comedian or spectator.

Epic poem by John Milton

In “Paradise Lost” the figure of Satan is represented by the actress Cristina Plazas and the role of God is played by the actor Pere Arquillué.

The theme is a statement of intent that ties in perfectly with the original work. In it, the devil is not so bad and the divinity is not so good.

In the background, the English poet seems to take Satan’s side by defending him and understanding his actions.

For his part, Plazas plays a vital role, since he flirts with the contradictions of the character himself and even with a final plea on the right of rebellion.

In the play, all the characters are in place. Even the supporting roles stand out, such as Adán personified by Rubén de Eguía and Eva by Lucia Juárez, who play the most plastic scenes.

Also on stage are Death embodied by Elena Tarrats and Guilt by Laura Font.

Director Lima has opted for a contemporary staging in form, but very classical in substance.

The Teatre Romea is one of the most iconic in Barcelona. It was born as a private theater in 1863, exclusively for the petty bourgeoisie and the popular classes. In 1981 it became the Centro Dramático de la Generalitat and by 1999 it was led by Grup Focus as a space of artistic actuality and with its own company.
