The rental market in Barcelona continues to be a constant topic of conversation and on this occasion, the news focuses on the opening of the application period for rental subsidies for both young people and the over 65s in Catalonia.
The Housing Agency of Catalonia has established an application process in two distinct phases. The first phase, which is already underway, is aimed at people over 65 years of age, extending from February 26 to March 27, 2024 at 3:00 pm.
The second phase, which will begin on March 11 and end on April 12, 2024, is intended for those under 35 years of age, including those who will be that age on February 26, 2024.
For the time being, a call for aid for the 36-64 age bracket has not yet been announced.
Renting for young people and people over 65 years of age: subsidies and requirements
If you are interested in applying for the grants, you must meet certain requirements.
First, the applicant must be the holder of a rental or assignment of use contract that proves that the home is his or her habitual residence and that he or she is legally resident in Catalonia. In addition, the income of the cohabitation unit cannot exceed 24,301.58 euros per year.
The maximum rental price is also a determining factor. In the metropolitan area of Barcelona, the limit is 950 euros per month, while in the rest of the metropolitan area and in Girona it is 650 euros, and in areas such as Tarragona, Lleida and Terres de l’Ebre it is 600 euros.
For the rental of rooms, limits of 450, 350 and 300 euros respectively are established.
The amount of aid varies according to the age and economic situation of the applicant. For those over 65 years of age, the subsidies range from 200 to 20 euros per month, while for young people, they can reach up to 250 euros per month in the best case scenario.
The process is done online
The application process is carried out digitally through two forms provided by the Housing Agency of Catalonia. It is important that the applicant is current on rent payments at the time of application in order to be eligible for this assistance.
