Catalan police create specialized unit to fight luxury watch theft

The Mossos d’Esquadra created a special unit against luxury watch theft in Barcelona. The objective is to stop this type of theft in the Catalan capital and to solve the number of cases.

The Catalan police will launch the unit this week in order to quickly combat this type of crime.

The unit was created as part of the police’s Tremall Plan to combat multi-recidivist offenders.

It is composed of officers from the urban crime group (plainclothes police). Also by agents of the Criminal Investigation Division, DIC.

Luxury watch theft soars in the city

And this is due to the reopening of both nightlife and the return of tourists to Barcelona after the pandemic.

The issue is that there are now more potential victims on the streets, which has reactivated criminal activity.

According to data from the Mossos d’Esquadra, 64 thieves specialized in the robbery of luxury watches have been arrested since the beginning of 2022. The resolution rate for these thefts is approximately 40%.

With this new group of Catalan police, the percentage of cases solved is expected to increase.

They also seek to join forces and knowledge of street crime with the expertise of plainclothes police officers. The advantage is that they know multi-recidivists at a glance. All thanks to the work carried out by DIC researchers.

It is expected to determine whether some of these multi-recidivists operate in organized groups in the city.
