2 Barcelona pizzerias among the best in Europe

The website “50 Top Pizza” publishes every year its list of the 50 best pizzerias in Europe. The great news is that within the 50 there are two Barcelona pizzerias. The lucky ones are La Balmesina and Madrelievito.

Behind the Web are culinary experts such as Luciano Pignataro, Barbara Guerra and Albert Sapere, who each year take great care in choosing the best places to make up the list. By the way, this list does not include any Italian pizzeria.

The two pizzerias in Barcelona that make this year’s list are: in 32nd place, repeating the ranking, La Balmesina (Balmes, 193) and as a surprise in 28th place is Madrelievito (Carrer de la Llacuna, 1), which is distinguished by the preparation of Neapolitan pizzas with sourdough and wood-fired oven.

The Neapolitan Madrelievito is the best example of the true Neapolitan pizza, where its main secret is the dough. The pizzeria was born with the aim of creating a corner of Naples in the Catalan capital, offering diners an authentic Neapolitan pizza at affordable prices.

They use mother dough baked in a wood-fired oven for 24 hours (following the Neapolitan tradition) and using quality products. The owners come from a family of typical Neapolitan pizza makers who learned the art in Naples, then experimented in London and Atlanta before arriving in Barcelona.

Madelievito, one of the two best pizzerias in Barcelona and Europe, operates in a small and cozy place with fresh and delicious ingredients. There is a variety of flavors: the most popular are margherita, marinara and Neapolitan pizzas. The menu also includes pasta and a dish called tris: three little iron casseroles (cocotte type) with typical Neapolitan dishes, which may or may not be pasta.

Madrelievito is currently setting up her second store, which she has named the “Madrelievito Lab”. They are also very active in catering and preparations for events and meetings.
